I have had this book read for like three weeks, and I just haven't had the chance to sit down and write my review of it yet.
Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson follows the story of two princesses - one, trained all of her life to marry the God King, ruler of her enemies. The other, the youngest, least important sister who shrugged off all of her duties as often as she could. When their situations are switched at the last moment by their father, the sisters find themselves out of their depths. Siri is sent to Hallendren to marry the God King, Susebron, unable to interact with her husband except to bear his child. Vienna follows her sister and starts working with the underground, trying to find a way to save Siri. Underneath all of the vague politics, a serious plot to destroy the God King, Hallendren, and even Siri and Vienna's homeland comes to light. Can the sisters save the people they love?
Overall, this book is another Sanderson masterpiece. I love how carefully the plot is designed, with twists that are unpredictable. The way this story builds is masterful, and the intertwining storylines are well written. Sometimes with character rotations, I find myself skipping a character's story I don't love, but that is not the case with Warbreaker.
I love the magic system in this book: color and Breath. It's so fascinating, carefully considered, and well designed. I love Siri, Vienna and Lightsong - to be honest, Lightsong's sense of humor is probably my favorite. I love his flippant attitude toward being a god, and yet, in all actuality, he takes his position quite seriously. I love that he ends up being the hero of the whole thing, saving Susebron.
The characters in this book are awesome. I love the mercenaries, Denth and Tonk Fah. Their sarcastic humor is hilarious. I also love Siri's bravery, and Lightsong's sardonic attitude. I even like his head priest, and how Lightsong perceives him throughout the story.
When I initially read this book for the first time, I hadn't read The Way of Kings. Now having reread Warbreaker, and some of the Stormlight Archive, I can see the Nightblood behaves very similarly to Shardblades in Stormlight. In doing some research, I read that this was initially supposed to be a sort of prequel to The Way of Kings before Sanderson completely rewrote the direction for that book, which I found interesting.
The only thing I don't like about this book is that it ends on somewhat of a cliffhanger - everything does resolve, but it's clear that there's more story that happens after this. This is a series that I know may never get finished, which is so unfortunate. I know that Sanderson is a busy guy, but I really want to find out what happens to Siri and Susebron. So please, Brandon, if you ever read this post... I really really really really want a sequel!
I rate this book PG-13 for some adult themes and violence
