I've been debating how best to give access to my spreadsheets for the dice game of choosing my next read. I've kind of settled a little on how I think I want this to work, but I'll update this if I sort of change my mind.
The Rules of Erin's Reading Campaign
- Books are sorted by genre.
- Dice determine the next selection.
- Series advance to the next unread volume.
- Completed books may trigger rereads.
- Certain dice have reputations.
- The bookstore and library are valid roll results.
- The d2 decides matters of fate.
- Books are chosen at the end of each rotation
- Audiobooks are special and are chosen as soon as they are completed
- Rereading is also a valid choice
Book Pools & Genres
I read in the following categories:
- Fantasy
- Science Fiction
- Realistic Fiction
- Brandon Sanderson
- Nonfiction
- Classic
- Audiobooks
- Mystery/Thriller
- Historical Fiction
Instead of giving you the full sheets for my books, I want to just give you the number of books in those pools, so here's what it looks like right now:
- Fantasy - 71
- Science Fiction - 26
- Realistic Fiction - 41
- Brandon Sanderson - 14
- Nonfiction - 71
- Classic - 51
- Audiobooks - 56
- Mystery/Thriller - 25
- Historical Fiction - 27
The books in these sheets are
Leave me comments of any books I need to add to my TBR!
I'm also in two book clubs and read with my husband. Those books are not determined by dice, but I include them in rotation updates. Sometimes I HAVE to focus them to get them done on time. If I end up with library books, those will also fall into that category.
How to Roll the Dice
For my bigger categories like fantasy, nonfiction, classics, realistic, and audiobooks, I roll two d10 dice. What this really looks like though is a percentile for the tens place and a d10 for the ones place. the 100 on these is 0 for now, I'll have to grapple with the change whenever I get more than 100 books on there... That's a long time from now... Maybe...
For my smaller groups like Sci-Fi, mystery, and historical fiction, I'll roll a D4 for the 10s place (1 is 1-10, 2 is 11-20, 3 is 21-30, 4 is either a reroll or 31-40). The d4 basically chooses the "decade." Then I'll roll a D10 for the ones place.
I'll try to re-explain in the rolling posts as it comes up. This is the section that might change the most drastically because I'm constantly thinking of better ways to come up with the rules.
